WAR ON ALZHEIMER’S IS LOSING

Alzheimer’s disease has the sad distinction among the top causes of death in the U.S. of being the only one with no treatment, no cure, and no way to slow its progression once symptoms appear. Although research continues, no new drugs have been approved for AD since 2003.  Meanwhile,  Medicare and Medicaid costs for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementias amount to about $153 billion in 2015, “about 261 times what the NIH will spend looking for  ways to prevent and cure the disease,” according to Bloomberg Businessweek, August 10-August 23 edition. As the article states, “these numbers are way out of balance.”
